Sun Protection in Winter

Do you wear sunscreen in winter?

We polled our Instagram followers and were surprised to hear that not everyone wears sunscreen in winter. When it’s cold, overcast, or rainy outside, the last thing you may be thinking about is sun exposure. But the truth is that the sun always rises, rain or shine, and the UV (ultraviolet) rays are always present, even when you can’t see the sun shining. There are different types of UV rays, all of which can cause damage to your skin.

  • UVA rays – the “Aging” rays – will cause your skin to develop lines, wrinkles, and sagging
  • UVB rays – the “Burning” rays – will cause hyperpigmentation and sun spots
  • UVC rays – the “Cancer” causing rays – are often absorbed by the ozone layer but any brief exposure to them can result in a burn and prolonged exposure can be fatal.

UVA rays can penetrate through clouds and also through glass so you are vulnerable to them even while you are commuting in your car or working in your office next to a window.

To protect your beautiful skin, and prevent damage and aging, sunscreen should be worn daily and diligently, year round. At our San Jose Med Spa, we carry an assortment of sunscreens that vary in application and feel, but all are chosen because they provide outstanding protection. Some of our clients prefer Colorescience‘s Sunforgettable Brush-on Sunscreen while others like EltaMD‘s lightweight moisturizer and sunscreen combination or TiZO‘s sunscreen that offers a sheer tint and a silky smooth finish. We also carry sunscreen products from SkinMedicaPCA Skin, and Revision Skincare.

If you need help figuring out which sunscreen is best for you, ask your Blu Cocoon clinician or our front desk staff member to help you next time you are in.
