Why do dark circles form?
There are a few reasons that dark circles may show up. For many people, it is simply because the skin around the eye is thinner than the skin on the rest of the body. For example, the skin around the eyelids is about 0.5 mm thick whereas the body’s skin is about 2 mm thick. As a result, the dark or discolored area is actually the showing of the blood vessels and blood under the skin.
For some people who have darker skin, a common condition called periorbital hyperpigmentation may develop. This is when more melanin is produced under the eyes and darker skin appears.
As we age, whether we have fair skin or darker skin, our skin loses elasticity and becomes thinner, making more of us prone to dark under eye circles and fine lines. Add in lack of sleep or stressful situations, and the dark circles may become more prominent.
