Shorts and bathing suits may be the last thing on your mind right now – with holidays right around the corner and sweater weather descending upon us – but now is actually the best time to talk about laser hair reduction. Why? Simply because getting laser hair removal is a process. There is no laser hair removal procedure that works in just one treatment. Most people require a series of 5 treatments (at minimum), every 6 to 8 weeks (or 4 to 6 weeks for facial hair), for best results. Starting now would put your 5th treatment in early summer. So, laser hair removal may not be first and foremost on your mind, but if it is something you have been considering, there is no better time than now to start.
Many people get laser hair removal because they are tired of the time and cost of waxing, shaving, and tweezing. It is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in the US and is more effective than it has been in the past. Laser beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles to damage them. Once damaged, they will no longer grow hair. Surrounding skin is not damaged. Laser hair removal can be done on men or women and any area of the body can be treated except inside of the nose and ears and immediately around the eyes.
To prep for the treatment, the hair in the area being treated should not be plucked or waxed for at least 2 weeks before the treatment. Hair should be shaved prior to the treatment.
It is important to note that sometimes a small percentage of hair follicles will not be completely damaged and some people may not experience permanent hair loss. This could be due to hormonal influences or just individual response to treatment. We recommend follow-up treatments as decided by your clinician. At our San Jose MedSpa, most clients are very happy after one series of treatments.
When you come see us for a consultation, please be prepared to show the clinician the area(s) that you would like treated with 1 to 2 days of hair growth.
