Tips on How To Wash Your Face by Blu Cocoon MedSpa

Facial cleansing: everyone does it (we hope)! At our San Jose MedSpa, we’ve heard all sorts of methods for facial cleansing. While there is not really a “right” or “wrong” way, there are ways to do it that will not only cleanse your skin but help to improve your skin too. Here are our tips on how to wash your face and encourage healthy skin along the way:

Remove Makeup First
Some makeup and sunscreen are truly long lasting. Remove makeup first so that your skin will be completely makeup (and/or sunscreen) free to fully absorb the cleanser. This is especially important if you are using a gentle cleanser as it may no be able to thoroughly remove or breakdown makeup debris.

Type of Cleanser Matters
We often place an emphasis on serums and lotions that we use after cleansing, but your actual cleanser matters. Choose one that is appropriate for your skin type and your skin will benefit. Bar body soap and hand soap are not good choices for regular cleansing as most of them are extremely drying. If you are in a pinch, you can get away with using something like that here and there, but make sure you return to your regular cleanser as soon as possible.

Facial Cleansing Wipes Are Not A Daily Cleanser
While these are so easy and convenient, facial cleansing wipes should not replace washing your face with cleanser and water. They can be harsh on the skin as many are filled with preservatives. If you are using one to remove makeup, flip it over to use the “clean” side midway through so you are not just re-smearing makeup on your face. Rinse with water after use.

How to Cleanse and Dry
A suggested cleansing route for your face is to start with your nose, going up to your forehead and coming down to your cheeks and chin. We suggest using the same path with each cleansing so you will not miss any area. Rinsing with lukewarm water helps further breakdown residue. Rinsing with cold water will not close pores and rinsing with hot water can be drying. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel. For acne-prone skin, you may prefer to dry with a stack of tissues as they are free of germs/bacteria and are gentle.

Cleanse Twice Daily or More
We recommend cleansing once in the morning and once in the evening. If you are going to workout midday, however, definitely remove any makeup prior to the workout. This keeps your pores open and free of makeup or bacteria that may get pushed into your pores from sweating or wiping your face with a towel.

Products After Cleansing
Apply moisturizer, serums, or special products right after cleansing, when your face is still damp. This will allow maximum absorption for active ingredients. Waiting until your skin is dry may make your skin feel greasy.
